Jonah Bolden has only been in the Las Vegas area for two weeks now, but the Australian product has already developed a good relationship with UNLV coaches. For instance: Bolden told RunRebs.com that he watched UNLV’s football game on Saturday at Sam Boyd Stadium with Rebels assistant coach Todd Simon.
Bolden is a 2014 recruiting target for the Rebels, and the interest has picked up on both sides now that he’s at Findlay Prep for his senior year. The 6-foot-9 combo forward was born in Michigan, but his family moved to Australia when he was young. He spent much of the summer traveling to the U.S. to play in showcase events, and his stock has risen dramatically in recent months (he’s now No. 62 in the Rivals Class of 2014 rankings).
Simon was instrumental in recruiting Bolden to Findlay Prep, and the two remain close, especially now that UNLV has offered a scholarship.
“Todd is the one that recruited me here, so I definitely have a good relationship with him. Now that he’s an assistant there at UNLV, he sort of has to start all over from scratch,” Bolden said with a laugh.
That relationship with Simon led to the two taking in the Rebels’ 58-13 loss to Arizona on Saturday.
“They got blown out, but it was fun,” Bolden said. “I was with Todd there. We were just talking.”
Bolden said he doesn’t have any official visits planned, and he doesn’t have a timetable for making a decision. He still has to take his SATs, and once that happens he can start making more definite recruiting plans.
Michigan is presumed to be one of the leading contenders for Bolden, along with UNLV and UCLA. Michigan and UCLA had coaches at Monday’s Findlay Prep practice on the first day for off-campus recruiting.
And while Bolden is still somewhat new to Vegas, he proved savvy when it comes to UNLV football.
“I left at halftime,” he said with a good-natured laugh.
