Dave Rice has contacted incoming high school recruits Rashad Vaughn, Dwayne Morgan and Goodluck Okonoboh to let them know he is staying at UNLV, according to a source close to the recruits.
Rice reportedly interviewed for the head coaching position at South Florida on Friday, but by Saturday it appeared as though Rice was in negotiations with UNLV to remain with the Runnin’ Rebels. The fact that he’s reached out to the incoming recruits would seem to confirm that he intends to stay in Las Vegas.
According to the source, both Vaughn and Morgan would have de-committed from UNLV had Rice left. The duo would have then tried to find a fit elsewhere as a package deal; Louisville and Indiana were among the schools that recruited both the first time around, and they were among the early options when it seemed that Rice might leave to take the USF job.
Vaughn is unsigned and would have been free to walk away from UNLV, while Morgan has signed a letter of intent and would have had to have been released by the university. Okonoboh, who has also signed a LOI, was uncertain about his plans in the event of Rice leaving.
With Rice back in the fold at UNLV, the source said all three recruits plan to honor their commitments and play for the Rebels in 2014-15.
