UNLV’s star recruit will get a chance to be star on an international level before suiting up for UNLV. Brandon McCoy was one of 12 players named to Team USA’s U19 FIBA World Cup team.
“We are very happy that Brandon has made the final cut for the U19 USA Men’s Basketball Team and is headed to Cairo, Egypt.” Marvin Menzies said in a statement. “It is exciting to have one of our young Rebels representing us in the World Championships! We will be watching and pulling for the USA to win it all.”
The tournament will take place July 1st through the 9th in Egypt. The United States has been drawn into the same group as Angola, Italy and Iran, and will play all three to determine seedings for the knockout stage. Games will be available to watch online through FIBA’s YouTube channel.
The United States Group Stage Schedule
- July 1: Iran (8:30 am PST)
- July 2: Angola (9:15 am PST)
- July 4: Italy (7:00 am PST)
The United States has won the gold in the last two U19 World Cups to bring the country’s total to six gold medals in the 12 times the tournament has been played.
As a top 15 player in the country, McCoy was the headliner of the Rebels 2017 recruiting class. He indirectly led to the signings of national junior college player of the year Shakur Juiston and guard Amauri Hadry. Those three vaulted UNLV into the top 15 in national recruiting rankings and gave UNLV fans hope for 2017-18 after sitting through an 11-win season in Marvin Menzies’ debut.
